St. Joseph’s Square is a 106-unit condo building in the historic Hydrostone neighbourhood of Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the site where St. Joseph’s Catholic Church stood for almost 150 years. St. Joseph’s Square was designed and built by Dexel Developments who strove to create a building that complemented the historical significance of the neighbourhood and the building site of the former church, while achieving a modern aesthetic.
Dexel designed a signage package that was consistent with the feel of the new building, and they needed a signage partner to help bring their design to life. Having worked with eyecandy on large-scale projects in the past, Dexel approached eyecandy to partner with them in creating the interior and exterior signage.
Taking material applications into account, eyecandy and Dexel created sign specifications that were achievable, vibrant, and elevated the St. Joseph’s Square brand.
Interior wayfinding signs with aluminum backers employ raised acrylic logo elements to achieve warmth and dimension, and frosted vinyl window treatments create privacy while maintaining openness and optimum light. The suite of signs throughout the building are fabricated from stainless steel with intricately raised acrylic logo elements to mark each apartment.
An interpretive panel to commemorate St. Joseph’s Catholic Church was also commissioned. The stunning panel instantly provokes interest and shares the history of the church, its destruction and rebuilding as a result of the Halifax Explosion in 1917, as well as documenting original elements of the church that have been preserved and incorporated into the existing building.
The panel is exquisitely constructed with embedded resin imaging — the gold standard in interpretive signage for its durability and longevity.
The result is a building with a unique aesthetic that preserves the character of the past while standing out as a stunning, modern neighbourhood landmark.
The exterior signs function in tandem with the interior with a look that is clean and dimensional, radiating a feeling of home.
In a building where every detail has been thoughtfully conceived, the exceptional signage at St. Joseph’s Square is the essential finishing touch that not only informs residents and elevates the brand, it also honours the site’s history.
